Jazzing up January

Let's be honest with ourselves. January is a bleak month.

Granted, excitement about resolutions and a new beginning usually does me good for a few weeks in. But then the grey settles.

I've tried, in years past, to overcome the ever-apathetic, energy-sapping January greys.
When Heather and I were the co-presidents of BYU's Woman's Chorus (a thought which should in and of itself make you LAUGH) we held a giant mess of an activity called "June in January." If I remember correctly, the program involved a flower for every choir member and car-pooling small groups of singers to several local rest homes - you know, to share some musical sunshine. I can't remember if it was fun or rewarding, but I do remember resolving never to organize 200 people into car pools again. I've made pretty good on that resolve.
Again, when I was a BYU RA, I attempted some sort of fight-the-winter-gloom activity with the residents in my building. I believe we spread out blankets all over our lobby floor and attempted a pot-luck "picnic" in the pretend sunshine.

But this year, I'm done trying to smother January with sunshine. Instead, we're attempting to embrace it in all of its freezing cold, Christmas light-less glory. We're currently in the middle of a January...count-down (for lack of a better term).
Everyday Lucy opens an envelope and we participate in whatever winter-ish activity is specified inside. The activities are as simple as can be, but of course, half the fun is to "open it up!! It's an envelope!"
I know, I know, It's kind of cheating to steal the Christmas advent idea and use it in January. But we ARE cheating, big time, because we also separated our pile of Christmas decorations into "Christmas" and "Winter" categories, the latter items being used in our Jazz-Up-January cause.
And so we Trumans wish you a merry, if grey, January. Just don your shivers and burrrrs and you can join us in our month of freezing joy. (I almost hate to admit that we're kind of having fun! Give me ten years of this happy-wintering and I just might bump this frigid first month of the year up to second-least-favorite of the twelve!!)
We'll post pics of our January activities at the end of the month.
You got any favorite wintertime traditions? Send them our way!!

What a good idea! I was just thinking myself today that I can't WAIT till spring, I'm done with winter! But, here are some fun activities: ice skating (i don't know if Lucy can do that yet), sledding, snowmen and fort building, snowball fights... By the way we should get together sometime before we leave Provo. We've been here all this time together and I didn't even know it so we might as well get together now before we leave!

Another really fun activity is to take water colored with food coloring and "paint" the snow. This works especially well when you have a nice open field...but can lead to being cold and wet if you're not careful :)

Way to go!! We can be miserable or mighty....depending on our choice!
So, mighty ones, I join you in making this blaugh month better!
How? Hmmmmmmm I shall have to think about that.
I think of seeing our little Annie B. in her sunny kitchen baking treats.
(Dad says: "Just pull up the covers and stay in bed")
or...How about tenting with your little animals under a covered table..... Oh, well, so much for ancient offerings..... mom

I love the idea and wish that I could be home to participate in the fun. I will have to try that next year, or I guess anytime there is a blah month. Something that might be fun, you might have done this for December but is to make snowflakes and decorate with them. We even did foam snowman, with a kit, that Madelyn thought was fabulous.

If you get a chance please give the ideas that you have used so we other people can use them.

January is so dreary! Good idea!

On my fun list tomorrow...go get my car checked out...(just kidding, not fun) but instead of sitting at the shop and waiting for my car to be done...my friend said she'd come with her car so we could go shopping (Target here I come!!) That's fun and should brighten my January right up!

Lucy couldn't have asked for a more fun mom! New Year's Resolution: be more like Lori!

Lori, I have to agree with you. I've been totally feeling the January stay-in-bed-all-day-and-do-nothing blues.

Great ideas, thanks! Just curious, what are some of the "activities" you are doing with Lucy?

ok...I laughingly have one more comment to make that might make everyone enjoy the month of January more..... I tried to put it on Amy and Ryan's blog, but couldn't get it to work.

I simply take Ryan's Christmas 'card'...and read one page a day. It keeps me laughing until the next day.
It is a real-life Harry Potter-be-doombed adventure story that makes the days fly by in unbelief, wonder, and laughter.

Lori you are a genius! What a great idea... I might have to steal it. What are some of your activities that you've been up to?

Um, I didn't realize how much I dislike January until now... hhmmmm. Cute advent. You are such an amazing mom, but no surprise there really.

I have no good ideas, we are going to a fire station tomorrow... and we went to a 'butterfly zoo' last week. I would love to hear what you guys have been up to though! Share so we can cheer up our Januarys too!!!

Even though I don't like the cold much, oddly enough I enjoy winter a great deal most of the time. I love the rain, and I love the snow even more. I think it is so beautiful. And it is good for a lot of fun activities when I find the time to participate in them too. I love a good snow ball fight, making snow sculptures, sledding, snow shoeing, and cross country skiing. It is a lot of fun to do activities with my family and our dog Apollo, who loves the snow and chasing snowballs. It is funny to watch him try to pick them up in his mouth occasionally in attempt to return them to the thrower.

You're such a good momma!!! The good thing about Vegas is that it's about 60 degrees out...the bad...no snow. My kids have yet to see snow! Can you believe it?! Next year we'll have to remedy that!

Well aren't you clever! I concur that January stinks. I told Taylor that we need to have some serious January parties to make it not stink. So let's party, girl! (We have margarita glasses and colorful little umbrellas for them, so get excited.)

My comment is to go visit Magic Mountain ski resort....that will take up how many days?!....oh you are....ha....we can't wait and we're so excited we're on your advent calendar. You can check of snowshoing, skiing, tubing, hot tubing and traveling while you're here...look at us trying to help. Thanks for the smile (I spent a few minutes this morning in tears because of the grey day.) You're the best. See you in a few days.

so wish I could clone you so you could keep me company while I motivated myself to do anything besides wanting to curl up in bed and watch a movie. But I am determined to go on a walk today. it's looking more like we will be driving up your way in a few weeks! can't wait!

Was it you that I was having that conversation with about doing an envelope a day in January? I'll pretend that it was, so then I can feel proud that you used the idea. :) To help January pass by, we are celebrating the impending Super Bowl!

SUCH a good idea! That is brilliant. I have always thought January was a depressing month, and was really glad to "jazz" it up (for lack of a better term) by having a baby, thus also creating a January birthday to look forward to. Still, I am always looking for ways to make it not so blah.
Ideas? Nothing creative, but when we were in Provo in cold weather (like it was so long ago!), I took them to the mall play areas to play off some energy. And do you know about PIRC (parent information resource center)? I may have told you about it before...it's in Orem, and they do a Make-it-Take-it activity every Wednesday (story time, craft, singing time, play time)...we loved it. Plus, they have a great resource library to check things out from (although that was temporarily out of commission, as they had lost their building)...blah blah blah. Let me know if you want more info about that. OK. This comment is way too long.

Ah, the winter doldrums! Since it's been sunny and in the sixties here I'm not really feeling them right now, but that's not to say that I never have. Love the way you're jazzing things up -- you better watch out, January just might end up being Lucy's favorite month if it gets too jazzy :)

The only bummer about the malls...University malls treehouse went down to the flood a while back (who knows when the new playground will open) and Provo Town centers mall is out while they film at MTV movie in that mall! But Kid to Kid has that little play area in it that Viana loves :)
