Goodbyes and Hellos

Spencer squawked and squirmed in my arms this morning as Wes and I wept over the passing of our gracious, beautiful grandmother - Wes's mother's mother.

And as my tears dropped on my baby's tiny head, I marveled at the circle of life. My heart filled with swelling gratitude for a certain knowledge that as birth is not the beginning of life, neither is death the end. (More on that note here.)
Hard on our end.

Happy on hers.

Goodbyes and Hellos.

So today, with our crying, we've been singing.

(And wearing our PJ's inside-out over our clothes.)

And we've been reflecting.

What is this thing that men call death,
This quiet passing in the night?’
Tis not the end, but genesis
Of better worlds and greater light.

O God, touch Thou my aching heart,
And calm my troubled, haunting fears.
Let hope and faith, transcendent, pure,
Give strength and peace beyond my tears.

There is no death, but only change

With recompense for victory won;
The gift of Him who loved all men,
The Son of God, the Holy One.
Pres. Hinckley “The Empty Tomb Bore Testimony” May/1988

And we've been remembering.

And, ultimately, rejoicing.

We love you, Gram!

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I showed Eli the video of Lucy, and I think he has a crush on her.

Tears to my eyes! What a beautiful post. My love to both of you and to Wes's mom especially! It's amazing the sadness and joy these things bring, even to an outsider, but . . . well, I'm not explaining myself well. What you said was perfect Lori.

Sorry to hear of the loss, but must remember the joys that she brought to the Truman's. Aren't we glad that we have the knowledge of the plan of salvation, it makes things like this a little bit easier to handle. Like Rachel and Jared said, your loss but her gain!

I remember so well when my Grandma died and know you are so sad. We are sorry for your loss but can see that your sorrow is mingled with the joy of the gospel and that is a blessing. Lucy singing brought joy to my heart, that is for sure. She can really carry a tune. Love to you all.

Our love to you all and Wes' family too. Just got back and heard the news. Love you so much. For some reason my computer won't play Lucy's singing on either of the last posts. Take care.

It is interesting... I met Grandma Bowler one time and was impressed that she was truly an 'elect lady'. I shall remember her fondly.
To paraphrase Shakespere: 'Sweet are the fruits of adversity.'
We add our testiment to yours of joyous reunions that await us, although tears stain our pillows during the tender 'good-bys'.

I don't remember much of what we talked about the few times I met her. But I do remember her offering Wes and I warm beds to sleep in and the smell of a delectable breakfast filling the house before we awoke. Then over breakfast I recall being surprised how at home I felt, how much we all chatted, and how small the half-century age gap seemed in Wes's Grandma's kitchen. I guess that's what a Grandma's supposed to be. You don't really recall much of what they said, but you'll always remember how you felt around them.

Even though I never met her-I felt like I did because of the legacy she left and the fond way she was talked about by your family...so sorry Wes. love all of you.

That is the picture of Grandma on the program isn't it Lori? How fun that it was taken with you and Wes. The program is sitting on my kitchen counter and I have been looking at it all day long. It was such a nice funeral and we will all miss Grandma very much. Thanks for posting...
