No Surprise

If there has been any theme to Wes's and my "special-occasion" history it is that he continually delights me with surprising gestures of love (like that very sneaky/sweet V-day post) while I am continually thwarted in my efforts to surprise him. With anything. Don't get me wrong. I do nice things. But I always blunder the surprise. The amazon confirmation e-mail gets sent to his inbox. My three-year accomplice spills the beans. I fail to intercept the mail.

This birthday has been no different. Bother.

So here's a sincere "Sorry, Wes!" to span all past, present (and I'm sure future) special, surprise-less occasions.

But maybe it's fitting. Because it's certainly no surprise that I'm in love with this newly-turned-twenty-eight-year-old.

I mean, really. Is it any surprise that I would be head over heals for the kind of man that cleans the toilet on Valentine's day (even though the lovely flowers on the kitchen table could have been considered payment of his just dues)?

Is it any surprise that I'd be utterly grateful for a husband who was not only worthy to give my aching head a priesthood blessing last Friday night, but was also willing to spend the evening rubbing it?

It's no surprise that I'm smitten with Wes's winsome smile - a smile that's even more charming when flashed across the top of our car as we both buckle kids into car seats.

No. It's really no surprise.

Nor is it surprising that I'm often humbled to the core as I watch (from bed) as Wes studies his scriptures. Any comments from me about the lateness of the hour are shrugged off with a casual, "I haven't read yet today."

And it's certainly no surprise that I would feel valued by a man who so often tells me things like, "Wow. You look great! But I'd love you even if you didn't."

So...no surprises 'round here this February fifteenth.
Just a lot of love.

Happy Birthday Wes!!
