Understandably, Lucy was too little and too distracted to catch the moral of Grandma's story. But she was enthralled with the box.
"What's in it?" She asked me.
I told her it was full of love and kindness.
She lifted the box tenderly to her cheek and said, "I just love this magic stuff."
Yesterday, my sensitive (read: emotional), scatter-brained, so-round self came home from a meeting to the unexpected sight of smiling yellow daisies, a homemade card, and a newly purchased copy of The Scarlet Pimpernel (a favorite, but until now unowned movie).
The occasion???
Nobody told me it was "Pamper-Your-Pregnant-Wife" day, but they must have reminded Wes.
Unnecessary, undeserved kindness.
Magic stuff.
And today I kept company with conference keys and conference forms and conference buildings from 7am-4pm. Not a bad work day, really. But imagine my delight at the mid-morning sight of fellow Hall Advisor Shayla (not assigned to check-outs and not required to be in the vicinity) approaching my work table with the glorious gift of a granola-bar and a bottle of OJ.
Unexpected, unrequested kindness.
Magic stuff.
Powerful magic. Memorable and motivating.
More influential than intelligence. More impressive than beauty. Don't you think??!
Last semester we found ourselves in a bind with a broken glider we had just purchased at a great price from the DI. We hesitated only a minute before calling our neighbor/carpenter/construction-management-major friend, Paul, to help us fix the chair.
(Below: Paul and his son Benjamin working on a couch. One of my fav pictures ever. Had to steal it from your blog, Vicky!)Wes, in awe as he watched Paul's well-honed and so-handy skills resurrect our broken chair, commented sympathetically, "You're going to be doing this kind of thing for people your whole life!"
Paul's so sincere response, "I hope so!" has been the topic of several subsequent conversations in our household.
Helpfulness. Selfless service. Sincere kindness.
Magic stuff.
Love these Joseph B. Wirthlin words:
Kindness is the essence of a celestial life. Kindness is how a Christlike person treats others. Kindness should permeate all of our words and actions at work, at school, at church, and especially in our homes.
Each one of us will travel a different road during this life. Each progresses at a different rate. Temptations that trouble your brother may not challenge you at all. Strengths that you possess may seem impossible to another. Never look down on those who are less perfect than you. Don’t be upset because someone can’t sew as well as you, can’t throw as well as you, can’t row or hoe as well as you.
“But,” you ask, “what if people are rude?”
Love them.
“If they are obnoxious?”
Love them.
“But what if they offend? Surely I must do something then?”
Love them.
“Wayward?”
The answer is the same. Be kind. Love them.
Why? In the scriptures Jude taught, “And of some have compassion, making a difference.” 6 Who can tell what far-reaching impact we can have if we are only kind?
May we be models of kindness. May we ever live up to the words of the Savior: “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
I'm so grateful for the people who fill my life with the magic of kindness.

Lori, you are one of the most kind souls on this planet. I loved this post... it was perfect for a Sunday morning read. Thank you!
Isn't it great to have such "magical" husbands? Loved this post...great reminder.
Thank you my lovely sister! You always know how to touch my heart
Thanks Thanks Thanks. Needed to read that this morning as I was stuck home with the kids while Jared went and fulfilled his calling unexpectedly this morning. The MAGIC that the kindness and love brings.
Undeserved kindess? I think not Lori, you deserve the best because you are the best! I'm so glad that you are receiving random acts of kindness because you deserve it!
Thanks Lori, this was exactly what I needed to read this morning. Glad you guys are doing so well.
Magic Stuff....Yes indeed. I was just writing a thought for prayer meeting Sunday.... on (of all things) the simple act of being KIND...........
and voila...look what happens-- inspiration flows, and my thoughts are beautifully expanded thanks to that wonderful, loving "Magic Stuff"
Yes, I agree with the others Lori...you are a great example of kindness. And thanks for the great spiritual thought on this beautiful Sunday afternoon.
Perfect! Thanks Lori! -Katie O.
That was a beautiful post, Lori. I found a link to your blog on Spencer's, so I thought I'd drop by. :) Much, much happier than my blog's have been lately. Thanks for your positivity.
"I just love this magic stuff" too! Thanks for being so kind and sharing yourself with all of us!
Your gifts of discernment and communication so generously shared make us all feel like being kind. We love you!
What a good thought! It makes me appreciate all of the little magical things that make life so interesting. What impresses me more is that you are able to be so optimistic at 31 weeks pregnant! Way to go! Also, thanks for the potty pearls of wisdom. I know it'll be worth it in the end! And we are so excited for our baby boy! Good luck!
It made me feel all happy - and even better, made me want to be kinder to people! (I LOVE The Scarlet Pimpernell!!!)
you are the best example I could ask for Lori. more than anyone I know, you make meaning out of your life.
What a sweet post, Lori! I always feel uplifted when I read your blog. We also did the Christmas boxes too, and it was a great tradition. Glad to hear everything is going well w/your preg. How are you handling all the heat?
Here's what is so funny! I got The Scarlet Pimpernel from Tay for my bday! I love you and MISS MISS MISS YOU!
Finally figured out where you were...Hope the babies are just as cute in person as they are on their blog! Perhaps another time we can get together for the museum.
Lori, I don't know if you remember me but I lived in the same apartment as you at BYU during the time you and Wes were engaged. I was Amy and Becky's roommate. Anyway, you guys look like you're doing great and your daughter is darling!
Where are you guys living now?
ps... Lucy's hot dog bun quote made me laugh! Too funny!
Jeanine - Wes and I laughed and laughed about that too =) Oh, children!!
Sonja - we do remember you! Fun to pop over and see you cute family! Thanks for leaving a note!
Andrea - great to hear from you! I'll have to e-mail about blog access. Yes, Wes is doing miraculously well and life is great for us. Thanks for taking the time to connect!
All friends - Every time you comment on this blog I want to respond! Life, of course, makes that impossible. I know you all understand that...but I just have to publicly declare that it makes me sad! Ok. The end.
Lori, you are so inspirational. I'm uplifted every time I read your post. I was talking to my friend Meggie this weekend and we were discussing how much we owe you. Because you befriended my sister and became roommates she lived in Southridge where she met Rich...who introduced us to our good friend Jordan Jones (who Meggie dated) and Amy married Jeff becuase she moved in with Jeanine (becuase Jeanine moved in with you) and we wouldn't have our sweet, thoughtful friend Kortney Pincock without it (There's more connections, but this is just a comment post). Thanks for being such a kind, sweet person that attractes everyone to you. Without you our lives could be pretty different! Thanks!
Elise - thanks for your sweet comment! It IS mind-boggling how our lives impact eachother so much! I was remembering the other day how even though you and I had had limited interaction, you were kind enough to e-mail us with an offer to babysit when we were going through a rough time. That meant so much to us!
Hooray for good friends, yes?!
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you and share your time. Your family has been the topic of very similar magical conversations in the Duersch home as well.
I'm a little late in commenting, but I loved this post, Lori! I feel blessed to have been the recipient of plenty of that magic stuff from you and Wes during the past year. I have never met people more kind than the two of you.
P.S. HILARIOUS Lucy quotes on the side! (Hotdog bun!)
P.P.S. Only 7 weeks to go?! Can you believe it? Hope you're feeling well (if not fabulous).
