Past time, really.
The "nukkie" had to go.
Lucy'd been sleeping with a soothie since birth.
Ah, such pacifying bed-time bliss!
True, like most paranoid parents, we'd worried about dental development and independent sleep skills, but it pretty much came down to laziness.
How could we just up and toss that blessed, tear-stopping, sleep-inducing device??!
But excuses can only last so long, eh?
With baby brother on the horizon, I knew that waiting "a little longer" meant waiting indefinitely.
So Sunday, we took the plunge.
We told Lucy that the Leprechauns were coming in the middle of the night to trade her nukkies for a special surprise.
Yes, Leprechauns.
Never mind that it's not St. Patrick's day.
Never mind.
Every good parent needs a scapegoat.
Lucy was totally enthused.
She drew a picture for the anticipated green visitors.

And she did, indeed, have a hard time falling asleep. She didn't cry and she wasn't cross. She was just...confused. Didn't know how to fall asleep. Wes and I couldn't help exchanging "poor little thing" glances every time she'd peek her head out of the door or call for one of us in a timid voice.
She eventually dozed, only to wake up multiple times throughout the night. At about 5:30 she was up for good. I laid by her until about 7, but the hour and a half was really just a restless struggle.
I finally whispered that it was time to see if the Leprechauns had come.
And they had!

She's learning fast.
And growing up fast.
And I readily admit that it's breaking my heart and making me smile, simultaneously.
And I suppose I'm growing up too, as yesterday was my twenty-seventh birthday.
But I think you could make the argument that I'm growing OUT more than I'm growing UP.
It might be because of the ripe baby in my belly.
Or it might be because of the "birthday cake" we three Trumans shared last night.
But fresh, seasonal peaches are my favorite!

FAVORITE.
And Wes must have known that, cause he served them atop my birthday breakfast yesterday too - making for the best french toast I've ever had in my life. Hands down. But it might have tasted extra sweet because I sat sleepily on the couch watching it be prepared by a darling Wes and Lucy pair, both clad only in their underwear. (And I do, actually, have a picture of that...but because I value my life, I'll post this later-in-the-day one instead...)
And speaking of my sweet Wesley, look at him all grown up and turned grad-student!
He survived orientation last week only to come home pretty exhausted tonight after his first official day of classes. I told him, don't worry dear. We'll only be more tired when baby brother comes. (Wives should be encouraging like that, don't you think?)
Glad that all of this growing up also means growing together!
Not sure it'd be worth it any other way!

oh i miss you trumans! blaine keeps asking lately, "could we go to lucy's and play sometime?" and today he wanted to watch lucy movies (on your blog). i reminded him we are on our way to utah which means we can indeed see lucy. YES!
What a big (and brave) girl Lucy is! We're starting to do a little growing up at our house, too....it's time to start letting go of the bottle in favor of the sippy cup.
Also, Happy Birthday! Sounds like you were very well taken care of on your special day. :)
Good job, Lucy! With both my kids, I thought getting rid of the bink would be so much worse than it was - the first 2-3 days were tough, but after that they were great.
And happy birthday, Lori!! I would take a cake like yours. My 27th is coming later this month, but for some reason I've been thinking I was already 27 for most of this year. =) 25 was traumatic for me, but I don't really mind approaching 30 now. I've finally realized that 30 just isn't that old - there's still a lot of life to live after that!
So so glad that you had a great birthday... complete with fresh peaches. (I used to ask for a fresh peach pie every year for my birthday. Mmm!)
And hurray for the nukkie stealing leprachauns!! Wonderful wonderful idea! Glad that Lucy is adjusting well.
And yea for Wes! Good luck! (Lori, I loved your "encouraging" words!)
Love your smarty pants parenting! I'll have to remember that one. My kids are thumb suckers, so a leprachan can't really steal those, can he???
So exciting about grad school!
And happy belated birthday! We've been enjoying fresh peaches at our place, too! So yummy.
Leprechauns...not bad.
We got Ben off his recently. Tried to cut the tip off and slowly cut it back, he took one suck and was mad, started screaming that his pacifier broke. BUT...aside from a couple of episodes the first day he's done fine.
Happy birthday Lori and good luck in grad school Wes!
I love to read your posts Lori! Love the leprechauns! I have been thinking of you and your approaching delivery. Enjoy the days and nights of sleep while you can. I am glad you had a great birthday!
As a former devout binky-sucker (actually, I made do with bottle tops) I am most proud of Lucy's adjustments. I think I put up much more of a stink, but fortunately, my parents seem to have blocked that memory :) Wish they had thought of leprechauns...
(p.s. I wish you would come and take away some of our fresh peaches - two people simply cannot consume three trees worth...)
Happy late bday Lori, glad you got your peaches. Azure never took a pacifer, she always spit it out or just tried chewing on it. We would always be disheartend to see a crying baby get completely calm w/ a pacifer while ours continued screaming. But the flip side I guess is no weaning them off right? The leprechauns are an ingenious idea and I love that they brought her gifts in exchange. And congrats to Wes on officially being an MPA student!
Yeah for leprachauns! Glad to see that each day is getting better for the little Lucy. (At least she willing gave them away). Spencer didn't give his up until he bit a whole in it!
Good luck with school Wes, and you too Lori
I am behind on the birthday wishes. You are truly amazing little sister and I look up to you. I'm glad you had bday peaches (my favorite as well). Would you guys get Skype loaded so I can talk to you and everyone else. I am so missing all of your faces. We are plodding along. I hope Wes doesn't have any professors like me....haha....
Leprechauns? That is a great idea! Losing my pacifier was much more traumatic for me. Believe it or not, that is about the first thing in my life I can still remember at this point...standing over the garbage can holding my broken pacifier and crying and crying and crying.
Happy Birthday! I am glad to hear that Wes and Lucy made it special for you!
so cute! SO much growing up going on in that fam! Way to kick the nook! Easier than you thought it would be overall, huh? Wes looks so great as a grad student!!
Happy Birthday Lori...we were talking about you here on your special day and we are so thankful you married Wes! Can't wait to meet baby boy. I love your "growing out" more than "growing up" comment...oh, I know that feeling! :) Love you!
Happy bday, Lori! I admit I am getting a little OCD about checking your website. I am excited to hear about your soon-to-be son! Lori you are such a great, creative, awesome mom. What a fun idea for the nukies. Ezra never took a pacifier. This may border on child abuse, but we actually tried to tape the paci on his face. Somehow he would always pull it off. Like Deanna, I would always get envious that other kids could be calmed down with a paci, but on the flip side there was no weaning involved. However, I think I would rather have a kid use a paci, and deal with weaning later, then have a kid that isn't soothed by one.
I'm going to need to remember that kind of creativity for when I have kids. It sure beats reasoning and logic. Hope school is going well Wes. And we are so excited for Baby Boy to come! Can't wait to see you guys again (and just for the record, Royce is dying to try out the new Cannon Center . . . someday).
Love you guys!
Genius!!! So great. I believe in things like this. And telling kids that you're allergic to rocks and what not. It's great! Oh I love it!!
Growing and Learning CAN BE FUN!!
(However, I havn't heard from you since Tuesday....you better report in before I jump in the ambuliance to come see if all is well :):)
What i wouldn't give for a ripe slip from the peel peach! YUM!
How is the goodbye to the comfort going?
Good to hear the report yesterday, we are all waiting for the new little one!
That's fantastic, how you got her to let go of those. :D And, I really wish you didn't value your life so much, because it'd be really really funny to see Wes and Lucy in their underwear, absolutely priceless! Actually, I'd rather you DO value your life, because we love you Lori! Hehe! Oh, and sorry if you're confused, I only deleted the former comment to put on this one... HAPPY LATE BIRTHDAY! :D Sorry I missed it, but I truly hope it was a happy one, and that baby boy Truman will make a nice (though a bit late) birthday gift!
I love the pacifier story! I anticipate that we will have a similar Soothie battle when Rhett is older since he sure loves his. And although I have always told myself that I wouldn't be one of "those parents" that keeps a pacifier on hand wherever I might be, I think I'm beginning to see the value of the blessed soothers and setting myself up to be just like "those parents" after all!
And happy *late* birthday! I hope this year is happy for you, as I'm sure it will be with a handsome little boy joining your family. I wish you the VERY best in the next few weeks!
