Then and Now

Spring was the perfect time to have a baby. Promises of life were peeking out everywhere. We drove to the Doctor's office for yet another pre-birth check-up amid the blossoms and brightness of mid-May. I was already four days over-due, but having a certain childish love of anticipation, I didn't feel too impatient.

The doctor threw some promising numbers around and, after a charming little "let's get things moving" procedure, promised us that the birth of our daughter was imminent.

We went home. Wes gave me a blessing. We walked down the hill to the duck pond and watched a parade of new baby ducklings.

Lucy was born the next morning.

I wish I could remember every detail of the experience. I only vaguely remember the pain. My journal tells me it was agonizing. I remember blessing the anesthesiologist and his magic needle. I remember being told to PUSH! and wondering if anything but my face was responding as I tried to comply. And then the nurse exclaimed, "look at those chubby cheeks!" and one glance at Wes's face told me loud and clear that he was looking at our baby girl.

I saw her too, for a few seconds, before the nurse whisked her to the side of the room. Wes followed and hovered. The doctor did his sewing quietly.

I shook as my mind relived the miracle. The gushing immersion of my water breaking. The sight of my baby, covered in blood. New life springing from pain. The symbolism was sharp.

A few tears found their way to the surface before Lucy was brought back to my arms and before I became preoccupied with the pressures of my sudden motherhood.

Three springs have come and gone since that miraculous day.

And now autumn approaches.

And it seems the perfect time to have a baby.

A time of welcomings and new beginnings.

A time of anticipation.

Strong anticipation.

Yeah, can't wait for you to have the baby and hopefully it will come on the 12th of September for my sake! :) Hope things are going well for you and the whole new neighbors and what not. Need to get together before the baby or after whenever we can be worked in.

Oh I can hardly wait to see baby Truman! Fall is a GREAT time to have a baby. The cold weather makes a great excuse to stay home, adjust and cuddle with the new little one--and sweaters and coats are so forgiving to a new mom's figure :)

ps. I agree with Heather... I"m rooting for September 12th!

I think having a baby the second time around is so much better. I felt so much better prepared, and when they laid Julian on me, it was a feeling of completeness (rather than newness, and, well, fear at having to care for this new little, helpless baby). Just a few more weeks!!!

Yay for new babies! Good luck to you both on the very full year ahead. I would love, love to give you a night and/or few hours on a Saturday off. Seriously. I'm not in school anymore, so it's much more feasible.

Lori, thanks for your sweet comments on my blog. I am so excited for you to have a boy. You are a great mother. I learned a lot about being a mother when I worked as an RA for you. I love how you always had the primary songs playing. It taught me to sing primary songs to my children. I love singing hymns to William everyday. Thanks for your great example!

Royce and I tried to call you on your birthday, but without any success. I'm sure you were out celebrating with family (I thought about leaving a message--thanks so much for yours, by the way--but I wasn't sure how often you check your messages). Anyway, happy birthday!! Love you lots.
