Can't Resist

It's my dad's birthday today. Are you dying to see what he looked like 73 years ago (give or take several months)?
CUTE. (And don't you think just a few of Grandpa Dee's genes made their way into my Spencer Dee's DNA???)

Dad (on the right) was a little boy during World Ward II. When I was studying history in college, I interviewed Dad and others for a paper about childhood in Utah during the war years. My professor submitted the paper to be considered for a departmental award and I was happy when it was selected, earning me $150 and an invitation to an awards banquet. There was only one problem: I was supposed to bring a guest. A date was out of the question. Maybe a roommate? That seemed a little awkward and I knew my friends were busy. I put it off until it was too late. A few hours before the dinner I called my parents. I knew they couldn't drive down. There simply wasn't time. I tried to keep my voice casual and cheerful. "I'll just go by myself. It's not a big deal." They hesitated. I insisted. "Seriously. Don't worry about it! Love you!!" I hung up. I tried to ignore the feeling of threatening tears as I hopped in the shower and got ready for the dinner. I was a big girl. Of course I could go alone. But when I came downstairs, there was my daddy, looking sharp in a nice sweater.

Lots of people dutifully clapped as I received my award that night. But it was a crowd of almost entirely unknown faces. The event would have been utterly insignificant without my dad's sincere smile and his soft, repeated, "I'm so proud of you." I'm sure I'll never read the WWII paper again. But I know I'll never forget Dad's presence and quiet praise over dinner that night.

But, I digress! You want to see more pictures! Here he is at 12. If I had been a beehive in his Brigham City ward, I might have had a little crush. Pretty cute.

And the argyle?? Awesome.
I'd say my mom made herself a pretty good catch.

And really, very little has changed over the years. He's still quite a catch.

My family and I are LUCKY. Happy Birthday, Daddy!

I will agree with you Lori, nothing has changed on your dad over the years, looks the same as he did when he was dating your mom (or already married). You and your family are truly blessed to have such a wonderful father and Grandpa!

Happy Birthday Grandpa Packer!!!
