I grew up on the shores of dessert reservoirs like Lake Powell. Red rocks and lizard hunts and muddy shores. I think I went to the ocean when I was three or four? I have vague memories of seashells (?) but no ocean nostalgia. None. Zero. Zip.

When our friends suggested a seaside gathering, I thought: "That'll be nice." The end. I did not anticipate falling in love with the beach. "The beach is for people who look good in bathing suits to sit around and get a tan," I thought. "Nice, but not my thing."

And...I was very wrong. The beach was
beautiful. Positively
majestic. Not to mention endlessly fun.

Duh, you all say. Duh, I now say. I loved it all: the soft,
soft, fine sand, the endless sky, the lulling lap of waves on the shore, the hours of running, climbing, laughing, and looking - just me and my Lucy girl, the overcast early mornings, the sunny, carefree afternoons, the birds, the crawling, sand-covered babes, the smiles I shot at Wes and the ones his rugged, whiskered face returned.

So there you have it. I loved the beach. We
all loved it.

Loved it and loved it.

And then we ate ribs for dinner. And they were to die for.

(But, actually, not quite. The rest of our party -Heather and Royce and Michelle - arrived after dinner. Boys ran some errands. Girls chatted. There was a failed fire and s'mores in the oven. And lots of laughing into the night.)
Tomorrow...
Pajaro: Day 3 Wherein we spend an arm and a leg and the entirety of our retirement fund for admittance into the Monterey Bay aquarium, cruise miles of beautiful ocean coast, and meet Shampton.

Can't wait for day three!
ohh...such cute beach pictures. loving the recap on your trip. like maria said, can't wait for day three.
my sentiments exactly about the beach. makes me realize why people pay outrageous amount of money and sit in hours of traffic to live by the coast. :)
I'm so glad that you love the beach. It's the biggest thing I miss about California (besides my family of course). Some days I walk outside and think "this would be the perfect day for the beach." I use to voice that opinion aloud but Rich just gave me funny looks.
"Patience, patience, patience, is what the sea teaches. Patience and faith. One should lie open, empty, choiceless as a beach--waiting for a gift from the sea." Anne Morrow Lindbergh
I'm bringing you the book, you will love it now that you've been to the beach!
retirement funds are for boring fuddy duds anyway. :-)
Looks beautiful! And sounds like so much fun! I so wish that we could have made it too.
I've never been a beach person. Grew up 30 minutes from it. Went twice a year. But our beaches were broken-seashell covered, cold and busy-busy-busy.
The beach is a wonderful thing and even more fun when you are one of the few ones to enjoy it that day. We also try and go when we visit California. Can't wait for the next adventure.
Footprints in the sands of time...
I kind of pictured it spelled "Champton." But I guess that looks too much like "Champion." Thanks for posting about this. I think I'm going to be lazy and just post links to all of your blogs.
oh yes, you will love anne lindbergh's book...can I borrow it next sis truman? ;)
