We did a lot of cozying up at Grandma and Grandpa Truman's this season. Bless them. And our kids watched a lot of movies. Well, a lot of just one movie, actually.
I stood for several minutes in ShopKo debating between Mickey and the Muppets (my favorite versions of Dickens's classic...neither too scary...in fact, pretty much all Spencer could talk about this season was "Dat blue Goofy! He said 'scrooooooge.'" ). I ended up buying the Disney DVD in a heartbeat when I noticed that it included another favorite Christmas short:
Have you seen Small One? It's a treasure.
(And lucky for Lucy, Grandma Truman had a real small one that Lu could take home...and take care of... and take to Kindergarten for show and tell...)
Lucy and Spencer both love the end of the film with it's gentle Joseph and it's radiant Bethlehem star.
So do I.
I've thought a lot about the Christmas star this season. That beautiful, big star. That bright herald of good tidings and great joy. I've thought a lot about the Savior. The "high priest of good things to come." "The bright and morning star." I've thought a little about Robert Frost's poem:
O Star (the fairest one in sight),
We grant your loftiness the right
We grant your loftiness the right
To some obscurity of cloud --
It will not do to say of night,
Since dark is what brings out your light.*
A poem with various interpretations, to be sure, but one I've found great meaning in over the years and especially this season of starlight. Of Christ's light. Of constant, eternal, unchanging light - "to stay our minds on and be staid."*

I've never seen Small One. We'll have to look it up. And that picture of Lucy with her Small One is precious!
Truly Tender Times!
Where have I been...to have missed your blogs?
"O that I were an Angel, and could have the wish of my heart...."
Hard times come... Strength, prayed for, comes in hidden ways... Love surrounds us... and our perspective is enlarged.
How have I never seen those movies?
Gotta love Dickens's "A Christmas Carol". I made it a point to read it for the first time this Christmas. As always, your kids are sooo cute!
Oh I LOVE Small One. I need to get that one for our boys. It was one of my favorites as a girl.
