October 2003
Wes and I made a pie every fall. There was no real reason, except that we both liked pie, and the process of making pie was longish and togetherish. Which was perfect.
We baked our first pie in the tiny oven of our DT Hall Advisor apartment. The same apartment we brought Lucy home to as a baby and where we learned of Wes's cancer diagnosis.
We baked several of our yearly pies at my parents' house. Somewhere I have pictures. Sometimes we made pumpkin pie, sometimes apple. One year we tried peach, but we never made it again because the effort seemed wasted. Peach cobbler is much tastier and significantly less taxing than peach pie.
Last year for Christmas, Wes and his mom gave me a new pie plate and a pastry cutter. So today, after a lovely (with my family ) but difficult (without Wes) Thanksgiving break, we came home from church and I told the kids we were going to make a pie. Never mind that we'd already eaten pie on Thanksgiving day with the rest of America. It was the process I needed.
Longish and Togetherish.
Step One: The Crust
Step Two: The Filling
Step Three: The Topping
Step Four: The Waiting
Step Five: The Cooling
I think our Dad would be proud, don't you?

That first picture of you and Wes is darling! Lucy and Spencer will treasure pictures like this, they show the love in the relationship between Wes and yourself. You've inspired me to want to capture more pictures of our day to day life. My heart aches for you during this season.
Happy belated Thanksgiving Lori! Hope yours was wonderful with your darling kids! I started making pies this year and over the break made one with my sister-in-law... definitely a longish, togetherish kind of activity. It's boring yourself!
Thanks for the inspiration this morning!
Been thinking of you lately. Love that you made a pie with Lucy and Spencer.... what a wonderful tradition to carry on with them. James has been my little pie helper lately :)
ps. The pie looks heavenly... send me the recipe?
I love that pic of you and Wes together. I always admire your ability to take pics during the cooking process with kids (so stressful for me). I pray Dec will more happy than it is hard. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
I never knew you and Wes made pies together. Not that I should have known, but I'm glad to have that little glimpse into one of your traditions. Been thinking of you lots!
Love you and everything about you. Thank you for the little glimpse into your day to day life. I do admire you and your ability to take pictures of the day to day and journal it for us all to see. Let's get together soon!
What a wonderful tradition. I'm glad you are carrying it on with your children.
Not telling about the 'hidden' tears and snuffles I witnessed Thanksgiving evening when all had gone to bed..... Love you so very much, (MY brave little One).
Like Tigger and Spencer, you simply 'boing back' after you tumble!
I'm glad I'm not the only person in the world who is sentimental about pies. Shane and I made one together on our first date and I honestly believe it's why he married me. :) So whenever I make pies, for me, it's almost a reverent experience. That is until Shep sticks his finger into my freshly baked (and thankfully cooled) apple and punches a hole through the top... :)
Good for you continuing these family traditions. I can tell your kids love them!
HI Lori, Was thinking about you over the holiday, I hope it was okay. You continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. Moved into my new house, would love to have you up soon. Love you! Lisa
What a wonderful and meaningful tradition, Lori. That pie looks yummy! I've never seen a pumpkin pie with a nut topping, but it looks scrumptious!
And now you must post the recipe! YUM! I like that longish and togehterish :)
I think we are well due for a visit, my house or yours?
What a great tradition to keep doing! I'm sure you are a master pie chef and your kids will be too!
