Dear Grandmas,

Lucy was darling in her second grade Christmas program.

Just thought you'd like to know.

(Spencer, unabashedly singing along from the audience)

(she was very proud of the black lights and wanted the whole thing videoed.  ;)

The plan was to come home and make hot chocolate before bed.  But Spencer earned a ticket to bed-without-hot-chocolate when he threw Lucy's second grade Christmas program kazoo in the toilet.

He was sad about that.
I laid by him and patted his back while he cried in bed and wondered if I was being a horrible mother.

But he settled down after a few minutes of snuggling with his squirrel, listening to Lucy quietly singing "It's a Marshmallow World..." in the hallway.

I stayed by him a while after he was asleep, loving the warmth of his little self, loving the sound of Lucy giggling in her room over the Junie B. Jones book a friend gave her yesterday.

I do love them.
And I hope that counts for something.
We'll do hot chocolate for breakfast.

Lucy was adorable - you must have been SO proud. As for you wondering if you are a 'horrible Mother' - how can you ever doubt that you are a wonderful Mother when you are raising such delightful children? I am in awe of your parenting skills, and although my step daughters are grown women now, I still draw inspiration from you about good parenting.

What a darling program. And I think my favorite is the picture of Lucy so eagerly posing for you, while the boys in the back are acting up and making silly faces. Love elementary kids!

And I know everyone will tell you that you are not a horrible mother (which they are right), but I can only imagine how hard it must be to fight the part of you that wants to give in and say, "forget it, I can't stand those tears, let's have some hot chocolate anyway." I'm amazed at the love you have for your children, and the way you show your love to them, even in their less shining moments. I love you and I love them.

How fun! She is a very talented little lady. And what a fun program she got to participate in! Blacklights?! "Down dooby doo down down"?! That was not part of my second grade Christmas program.
Don't worry about whether you are a horrible mother or not. You are just "Mother" and that counts for a whole lot of things. It means that you have to be tough sometimes so that he will learn that consequences happen. It means that you get to talk with these two amazing souls and see how they view this world and learn from them too. To be awed by their experiences of new feelings or hard to understand feelings. You are a wonderful mother because you are trying and because sometimes you doubt your own abilities. That means that you are thinking and wanting to be better and will continually improve. I just realized that the heading of this post is to the Grandmas. And so I'm sure there are a handful of those who read your words and have better insight than I. I love you and your little munchkins.

Lori, you are the best of mothers! It's easy to feel otherwise when administering consequences like bed-without-hot-chocolate. I think hot chocolate for breakfast sounds like a great idea!

Lucy is darling in her blue dress.

Very cute!

And I agree with what Heather said... you are so good at loving your children. I would not have had the patience to lay down with him... I have so much to learn from you!

Oh thank you! I love watching Lucy perform! Wish I had been there, but this is the next best thing. Spencer Dee is the best audience and I'm sure he could outsing the boys behind Lucy, even if he did throw the kazoo. You are the best momma! He'll tell that story someday and remember the "showing forth of love" lesson. love you, see you soon!

Fun! (And as everyone else has already said, you are definitely not a horrible parent! On the contrary, you are a great example of good parenting to me.)
