The thing I love about little holidays is that they're totally optional. It's fun to go all out when it's convenient...but you're not a Grinch if you opt out. We've had lots of small holiday years "on" and lots of small holiday years "off." And this year was a year off as far as I was concerned. There was enough preschool celebrating going on, I wasn't going to duplicate everything. Sorry, Lucy. But not too sorry! Because that's the thing: no truly significant loss.
I went to bed on March 1st glad that we could wake up the next morning (Dr. Seuss Saturday) and read books together in bed and pull out the cat's hat and...that would be a wrap. Sounded great.
True to the plan, I slept in the next morning. Well, tried to sleep: Lucy was up and about and opening my blinds to show me the sunrise and wish me a happy Dr. Seuss's Birthday.
I couldn't repress a smile at her enthusiasm. But I sure didn't get out of bed. Spud and I snuggled and talked until his stomach demanded attention, so he and I finally got up and walked out to the kitchen.
And found this:
Complete with seussical rhymes on the napkins!
I laughed out loud, completely delighted, and thought: I've arrived. Lucy can officially assume all the creative responsibilities of my life and I'll be off the hook forever!
But really: the fun is contagious.
How could I serve anything but green eggs and ham on that table??
(They were LUCKY we happened to have canadian bacon in the freezer!)
And so...
...it was a party.
Thanks to our girl.
Since we had eggs for breakfast, I figured cold cereal would do for dinner.
And as we curled up to watch Sneetches before bed,
I felt really grateful that Lucy had enthusiastically kept this favorite little family tradition alive. But that didn't mean I changed my "opt out" plan for St. Patrick's Day! ;) We wore green.
And that was fun. =)
(cute rainbow treat from our cute neighbors!! and fun green festivities for Isaac's b-day!)
I was s i c k for a good seven day stretch this month, and so it truly feels like March has FLOWN! And all of a sudden Easter is next week! I panicked for a moment last week because that's not a holiday I want ignored! But then I reminded myself that the beauty of Easter is internal. We're going to celebrate every day in our hearts...and any egg dying that happens on the side will be a bonus =)

This brought a smile to my face. It's hard to remember that opting out is okay, but something I think we should remember more often instead of feeling badly that we didn't do more. I especially love that Lucy took things into her own hands! You HAVE certainly arrived!
Oh, I just love her! It always gives me so much joy to see your Dr. Seuss parties. I really want to give Lucy a giant hug and tell her I'm SO proud of her...although since I haven't seen her in person for years, that would probably be a little frightening. I hope you'll pass the hug on for me, and throw a good one in for Spencer while you're at it. :)
You're a genius. Did you know? You are completely correct in the option of opting out. I opted out of Dr. Seuss but did a few things for St. Patrick. Although I didn't have any excuses like being sick or teaching preschool. And while you chose to opt out, I love the fact that your daughter made it a special day for all of you and encouraged a little bit as well. Happy March! Happy Easter!
"I've arrived!" Haha, I love it! I love YOU, Lori! I love all of the "optional holidays" you taught me about...and I also love that they're optional. We also celebrated St. Patrick's Day this year by...wearing green. We may have watched a Riverdance clip on Youtube too. :D Love that Lucy-girl--what a wonder she is. And I love all of the reality and the snuggling you share with us. It warms my heart.
Cutest post ever. That Lucy is a real gem, just like her momma. :)

That's what I love about those little holidays... that I can skip them if I'm overwhelmed or overscheduled! But I LOVE that Lucy took matters into her own hands. What a wonderful little girl you have! And I love the banana/strawberry hats!
Looks like she's inherited a bundle of creativity from her mom. Love that she is finding such joy in planning surprises for her family. What a sweet, fun girl she is.
We were going to celebrate St. Patricks Day with a sorts of party but didn't. We also decided not to throw our every so many years Easter party (didn't do this either due even though I didn't have to work crazy hours before Easter this year). Heather had too many concerts and committments this year and I'm still recovering from party planning the 31st on the 31st party (I get a year off from party planning I figured).
Love that little holiday party planner!
