Story Time

Holiday reading is probably my favorite holiday tradition with a two year old in the house.
This Halloween season, Lucy's favorite read is: Room on the Broom.
Delightful rhyme and repetition featuring a witch, a dragon, and a few little friends along for the ride. It's the perfect tempo and length for my two-year-old's attention span. I hear "can we read witch book?" thousands of times every day.

Lucy also loves Mouse's First Halloween. (I wish I had had this one last year! It's simplicity makes it great for even a tiny reader!). I like it 'cause Mouse gives a nice introduction to many of the scary symbols of Halloween. Lucy likes it because the simple text is perfect for recitation...

And these October days a large, frightening friend joins us on the story time chair.

Did I purchase the big hairy spider? I did not.
The story goes like this:

Wes knows my juvenile love for holidays well, and occasionally brings home delightful little seasonal trinkets...

(The smitten little frog hopped into my hands on our first Valentine's day; the sweet baby chick, the Easter just before Lucy hatched; the fun little girly-ghost, a gift to Lucy from her daddy last year.)

Could Wes be any cuter? Probably not.
So when Lucy and I got into the car with him the other afternoon and he pointed to a BYU bookstore bag, saying "I bought a decoration," my cheeks filled with giddiness and anticipation.
And then I pulled this out of the bag:
And you know what? Lucy loves it.
"Spidey- widey" is even starting to win a place in my heart too.
Thanks, Wes, for helping us to be... open minded :)
This post isn't meant to cut off discussion regarding the below post's important topic. We had some great comment-conversation. Please feel free to continue it if you have anything else to add!

That spider would creep my out!! but I really hate spiders!

I loved seeing you at the shower!! I wish we could have chatted more but I was feeling so nervous being the center of attention the whole time (I'd rather not be) Thanks for coming and for bringing your cute Lucy!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! Fun times, fun traditions, fabiously fun phantoms!!! I remember going around the early part of many halloween nights taking baked goodies to some of mother's older shut-in friends. I was primed to say: "The ghost and gobblins on Halloween Day, have come to GIVE a 'treat' ...and I would say... TO YOU!! (in stead of rhyming and saying 'your way'!)"
eeek..........I must have been about Lucy's age!!! Time flies when you are out riding your broom.
Loved the Stories!! dwp

Spidey-widey sure is cute and what a thoughtful husband you have. I need to find some good Halloween books for us to purchase that we can read from year to year. I will have to look into the titles you said but if you know of any others do let me know.

One of my all-time favorite Halloween books is a rather recent one. It's written by Jerry Seinfeld, believe it or not. It's his recollection of why Halloween was such a great holiday as a kid. Funny stuff, if I recall.

Also, my sister has these big spider decorations hanging on her front porch. Even though they're ridiculously huge, they still freak me out a little as I go to ring the doorbell.

My FAVORITE halloween book, 'We're going on a witch hunt'. So great. Happy Halloween Trumans. That spider is creepy. Good for Lucy for not getting freaked, she's got halloween in her blood.

As always, you tell a great story, Lori!

And Heath...that is SO also my favorite Halloween book. It's adapted from a comedy sketch Seinfeld did a long time ago. So funny. Have you gotten to listen to Seinfeld read it on the CD that comes with the book? Classic.

Kate - I'm with you, it's hard to be the center of attention! But you handled it beautifully! We were just happy to share in the happy occassion!! And we still visit your blog daily to drink in Charlie pictures!!

Mom - I totally remember being "the friendly phantom" when I was little too. Such fun memories (but I don't think I ever recited the cute poem. Did Grandma Bert make that up??)

Julie - thanks! What are you and Terry going to be for Halloween?? :)

Heather - looks like Heath and Carrie threw out some good titles below...we'll have to check into them! (and we'll continue to think of a good meeting time! Why is life so busy!!!?)

Jeanine - I want to bring Lucy to Oklahoma so she and William can trick-or-treat together! Sigh.

Suzy - Wes tells me (and appears) to be feeling pretty good! I'll let him contradict that if he feels the need...:)

Heath
and
Lindsay - I've got to find the Seinfeld book! That sounds so fun!!! Do you remember the title?

Carrie - can't wait to find "we're going on a witch hunt" - sounds delightful!

Just heard of a traditional "Witch Party" that has become a tradition in these parts. Participants come dressed up and everyone tries to discover which Witch they are: ie
sandWitch....or, which [Witch] comes first--the chicken or the egg (participant comes dressed as a chicken carrying an egg.
Cute huh.........I shall leave that fun cleaver stuff to you guys and gals! dwp

Love the ROOM ON THE BROOM & MOUSE'S FIRST HALLOWEEN, but most of all I love that Lucy has such a good momma! I don't know why Wes would ever think Spidey Widey was the thing for Halloween. . . looks more like Grandpa Truman's idea of a cuddly critter to me!

Love you guys! Happy Halloween!

So cute! Spiders are about as creepy as I like to go for Halloween! That was really sweet of Wes to buy that for you and Lucy! What a good husband and dad!
It was so fun to see you guys! Thanks for hanging out with us and taking us to the pumpkin patch. We watched the video and looked at the pictures today. Our kids said they had so much fun (especially with the corn maze challange)! We love you!

Maria - WE had a blast on Saturday! Thanks for making time for us! It was a real treat!

I do not like that spider!!! But then, I'm rather arachnophobic. I do love the book suggestions, though, I feel like I always have a hard time finding good todder/preschooler books, short enough for Brie but long enough for Evelyn. I can't wait to check these two out.
