Traditional

Some people usher in October with style...
(Be honest: how long have you spent on Martha's Halloween homepage?)

But we usher in October with sentimentality...
And newspaper ghosts.
These Halloween-rendered headlines floated up and down my staircase every year as a child. We still make them because they fit perfectly my criteria for "Lucy projects." They're simple. But they're a sensational hit with our resident two year old. Lucy has adopted ever single ghost into our circle of family love. We've talked to, "fed," and giggled about the "ghosties!" non stop since creating them during last evening's Family Home Evening.Such fun.
I will confess that I LOVE holidays. And I'm anxious to add more traditions to our Halloween repertoire. What are your favorite October activities/crafts/foods? What makes Halloween a special holiday at your house??? Please share!

And stay tuned...we hope to highlight a few more of our fall favorites as well...!

Hooray! We love Halloween/Fall season at our house. All through my growing up years we would always make pillowcase ghosts (draw a fun face and stuff it with newspaper!) and hang them in our yard. One day I look foward to having a real yard so that I can make pillowcase ghosts with my girls.

Just this morning I was thinking of the year my mom decided we should put on a Fall Festival as a home school entrepreneurial activity. We had a hay slide, tractor rides, lots of treats (caramel popcorn balls being the favorite), a scarecrow painting with a cutout for your face (photo op), and an elaborate corn maze - though most of it was constructed with stakes and black tarp - the only corn stalks were at the very front. It was fabulous fun, though it probably doesn't qualify as a "tradition" since we only did it once. The hay slide makes its reappearance from time to time.

I love these cute ghost ideas! We're going to make the newspaper ones today. And...when I get some extra pillowcases, this will be a spooky place.

My favorite October tradition as a kid was the family trip to the Vineyard nursery (the one on Geneva Road). We'd all get to help pick out the porch pumpkin, then we'd walk through their little haunted barn. Good times, we had, good times.

Love the post!
We don't really have any tradtions but I would love to start some. We are actually going to make some bats today to hang from the ceiling and probably will make some ghosts too but I usually do ghosts out of suckers and tissue paper/kleenex. I like the newspaper ghosts though, to bad we don't get the newspaper.

I am coordinating the decorating with Madelyn's preschool weeks so it will take a couple of weeks to get fully decorated.

Oh one thing we did last year was went out to a corn maze and picked our own pumpkins which was a lot of fun. Where we go they have a barrel train ride that Madelyn loves to ride.

Can't wait to hear more about your traditions!

Oh and Amy contacted me about Steve which I am so grateful for!

I went to Martha's homepage for the first time. It seems pretty cool but then again they all seem very hard and time consuming.

I love newspaper ghosts! I agree with you--I'm all for sentimentality! One of my favorite things as a kid was a couple weeks before Halloween, we would get out the costume boxes and choose our Halloween costume for the year (yeah, we definitely weren't one of those families that bought new costumes. Ours consisted entirely of hand-me-downs and made up costumes). And then we would go around the house "trick-or-treating" from room to room. We probably got like five pieces of candy, but I loved it. Maybe a fun FHE to do with fellow hall advisors.

Thank you Lindsay for reminding me of the name of that FAB Vineyard Nursery...I was just rying to tell Lori about it the other day but couldn't remember the name, or which road it was on!

What fun traditions, all!

CJ/Lindsay - CAN"T WAIT to hit the vinyard nursery! Sounds splendid!

Marie - wow! That sounds like quite the "fall festival!" We'd be tempted to fly out for the occassion if you ever recreate it! Let us know :)

Heather - your pre-schoolers will have such fun with your Halloween activities! And yes, I remember the blow-pop/tissue ghosts too! And you're right, very few of Martha's creations could be termed SIMPLE...but aren't they all such fun eye candy??!

Heath - I had forgotten how you guys used to do the pre-halloween trick-or-treating around your house! SO fun, I think that is!!!!!

you usher October in with the best kind of style; your own.

What a very fun craft, very cute ghosts, and a VERY cute Lucy.

I totally remember those newspaper ghosts from my days as your roommate! How fun. I might have to make some with William. We don't have many fall traditions. We do like to take William (and now James) to the pumpkin patch. We always carve it together the week of Halloween. Nothing too exciting.

Fun post! (sigh... if only I were as crafty and motivated as Martha...)

COOKIES! I love any reason to make sugar cookies with my kids. It takes a lot of time and is quite a mess to clean up, but so worth it! I love the holiday season because each month there is a reason to pull out the holiday cookie cutters and sprinkles (do sprinkles ever expire?) :)
My kids LOVE to take them to friends and neighbors, ring the doorbell and run.
Thanks for the other great ideas! Those ghosts are so cute, I've never seen them before but it is such a cute idea!
