Dreams Come True

With the sounds of Super Tuesday chiming in the background, let me tell you about my day's turn around.

I'll be honest with you: Tuesday is the most exhausting day of my week:
Long meetings.
All day. ("Super Tuesday" is actually an apt description.)
I mention this not as a complaint but as a prologue.

As I sat waiting for tonight's final, 7:00pm meeting to begin, and as Wes prodded Lucy back to the bedroom to commence with her nighttime routine, he gave me a slightly cryptic glance and whispered: "Put your boots on when the RAs leave." I didn't know whether to groan or giggle. Obviously, an outdoor event was pending.

Flashback:
February, 2004.
Valentine's Day Eve.
Wes and good friend Ryan are whispering behind Lori and Amy(married to Ryan)'s backs. The girls are exceedingly curious, but the boys drop no hints. Give no clues. Finally, Ryan instructs his wife, "Um, Amy, why don't you just sleep here on Lori's couch. Wes and I will be back...sometime." The two young wives raise eyebrows, but don't ask many questions. Husbands leave. Wives eventually fall asleep. Husbands return around 2am. Amy and Ryan go home.

The next morning (Valentine's Day), Lori wakes up to a darling little V-day decoration and a beautiful potted flower. Happiness...smiles...shmoozing. In the evening, Wes takes Lori to Amy and Ryan's house where the boys proceed to prepare a fancy filet mignon dinner, served at a candle-lit, fine china-clad table.

A delightful Valentine's day! But...why were the boys so glum? Why such long faces all day? Why so many confusing apologies made? What had they been doing until 2am the night previous? And WHAT in the world inspired dear husband to gift his wife a pair of thermal garments wrapped (quite cleverly) in a pink and black Victoria's Secret box...????

Fast Forward:
February 2008.
Tuesday staff meeting: finished.
Lucy: in bed.
Wes to wife: "Get your boots on."
Lori (cringing with thoughts of cold): "OK"

Husband leads wife by the hand across the snow covered grass. Wife wonders what is going on, until: hello! Igloo.

Laughter ensues.
Lori: "We have to send a picture to Amy and Ryan!"
Wes: "I called Ryan the minute I found it."

And so... we sat inside the igloo and lived the dream that my cute husband and his best friend had tried (until late in the night!) but had ultimately failed to create for their unsuspecting wives one Valentine's Eve long years ago. And you know what?

It was delightful!

And romantic!

(And surprisingly warm...but I could have used those thermal garments!)

So, amid the political clamoring of this important Tuesday night, my thoughts find themselves drifting from Washington's white house to the wintry little white house just a few paces beyond my front door and to the husband who continues, after five years of marriage, to capture my heart and my vote.

oh I am laughing so hard right now! one of my biggest regrets is how surly I acted that day...I'm glad wes redeemed himself...I seriously thought something was wrong today when I heard Ryan exclaim, "NO! Are you kidding me?" on the phone. Luckily I very quickly determined what they were talking about...if only we could be there with you. Thanks for the picture!

That is such a sweet story. Honestly, my heart melted with happiness for the two of you. I hope that someday I can be as thoughtful and loving a husband as Wes is. I look up to you guys so much.

This is such a cool story...I love it! I have always wanted to be inside an igloo and see if it really is "warm." I wish I were there to check it out! How long did that take, Wes???

Thinking about Tuesday staff meetings and your beautiful marriage made me miss you guys so much! I think about you all the time and will have to visit soon.

amy - knew you'd appreciate this!

spencer - I have no doubt you will be the most thoughtful husband ever! You are so wonderful!

mark/maria - I should clarify. Wes didn't construct the igloo this time around (he and ryan tried and failed four years ago to make one) - This one was built by some of our freshmen neighbors and Wes and Lucy happened upon it while I was at meetings. Fabulous igloo - no work. I choose this option =)

wendy - YES! come visit!

You must have the most wonderful husband who still tries to capture your "vote" each and every day. Way to go!!! I will admit that that is the best kind of igloo, the one you don't have to build. You always seem to be in the right place at the right time for wonderful things to happen! (Seriously!)

Cute Wes. I wish I had been in an ingloo instead of glued to CNN. I dreamt about delegates and projections and campaigns all night. Gag.

Love, love the last line, Lori. This story gets my vote for "Best of the Week."

How fun! I'm all about someone else freezing trying to make it and then enjoying it! :)
P.s. if Kate had hair like Lucy with curls on top and all over...it would be a different story. :) Lucy has the BEST hair ever!

I need to be a better American--clueless that it was Super Tuesday yesterday, nor do I really know what that means. No one come after me with a torch and pitchfork, I really do want to be a good American. Lori--what a treat after a long day! (and a 4 year wait!) This igloo must be close by, maybe the girls and I will adventure to find it!

Oh, yay! What a fun, romantic evening!

P.S.--I bought the dress.

Once again you two are too cute for words... I love it! I too wish I had been in an igloo last night. I couldn't sleep because I kept thinking about the voting (and James kept me up, but that's another story)

SO CUTE! Too bad there isn't enough snow to build a igloo over here!

ROAST said...

So did Wes build it? And if so how without a tent? (Wasn't that the idea last time?)

wes said...

No, I didn't build it but upon further investigation I discovered that the sides were packed with newer snow than the center. I think that it was a huge snowball that they gutted and put the "guts" on the outside to make it look like an igloo instead of a hollowed out snowball.

Beautifully expressed, Lori...capturing your heart and your vote.

We were up watching CNN til late as well and could have used this winter wonderland outing to relieve the tense anticipation of forthcoming results. :0) Maybe we'll have some hot cocoa tonight instead, seeing as how it was 70 degrees today, and we are snowless.

Great story, and I have to laugh because filet mignon makes me think of the Morris Center Valentine's Dinner. Oh, the themed dinners...

And remembering Tuesdays...sooooooooooooo long. I did, however, enjoy the comraderie (sp?) we enjoyed in our DT staff meetings. What a great "family" we had.

You two are something else!!!

You guys are the best. I was sitting by the pool in 75 degree weather yesterday and am now watching the snow drift outside the window....hmmm...the road is closed and I won't be spending the day with my Valentine. Is there a "lesson" in any of that....not really just random thoughts. You two make me want to be a better partner every time I read your stories. Look forward to seeing you on Mom's bday. Since I can't get home for my Valentine--I'm going to stay here and party.
