We told you the plan. You were excited. You helped us pack up the apples and granola bars. When we reached the head of the trail, you didn't hesitate. "Ten turns," I told you, "then we'll be there!"
When the Y was in sight, I congratulated you, "You made it!" But my exuberance was a little preemptive. "A few more walks," you reminded me, your eye ever on the goal.
Right.
I laughed and shook my head, and as we finished those last few "walks," I wondered aloud, "How could such a little girl climb such a tall, tall mountain?"
"Well," you explained happily, "You have to step on lots of rocks."

We're glad you're our hiking buddy,Lu. We're glad for the pace you set and the songs you sing along the way.
In other news, your dad and I had plans to go out on Wednesday night. The idea was to have you and Spencer tucked in and asleep before we left. It was a nice idea. Royce (The babysitter. Thanks, Royce!) waited patiently in the living room while we got Spence to sleep. But you didn't want to sleep. You wanted to play. We finally negotiated that you could complete one last puzzle with Royce, but then: right to sleep.
With the puzzle completed, you did go in to bed. But before your dad and I could slip out, I heard you calling for me.
"Mom!" you whispered (desperately), "I need you to sit by me!"
I walked into you room and sighed (desperately). "Honey, I can't..." Your distressed expression cut me off.
I sighed again and leaned in close.
"Do you know why I can't sit by you tonight?"
"Why?"
"Because your Daddy is taking me on a date. And we haven't been on a date for such a long time!"
Instantly the mood in the room changed. You raised you eyebrows. You looked at me approvingly.
"Won't that be special?" I asked. You nodded vigorously in complete agreement. It was as if there was a tangible, unspoken, womanly understanding between us.
I pressed my luck, "So I need you to lay down and go to sleep."
There were no more protests. You laid down.
"Will Royce be here?" you asked pleasantly as I kissed you.
"Yes." I answered.
"Goodbye, Mom." You waved solemnly.
Your dad and I had a good date. (A really, really good date.)

Thanks, Lucy.

Thanks, Lori for posting this. I needed some of Lucy's wisdom in my life right now. Your family is such an inspiration to me, and I'm excited to one day have a family of my own. Thanks for setting such a good example for me, and for the constant encouragement to keep moving forward and to keep stepping on lots of rocks. It really does help when it seems like you have a mountain in front of you, to remember to sing as you go, and to remember that you aren't hiking alone. So thanks, again, for sharing. I appreciate it.
So sweet! Love her BYU shirt appropriately worn while hiking the Y.
Lucy! Way to be such a big hiker! I wish we were closer so William could hike the Y with you!
She has got to be the sweetest girl in the entire universe! I just love her!
Way to go Lucy! That's a long hike for a little girl.
Nicely done Lucy, and Wes, Lori, and Spencer. Don't know if my Spencer would be up for the challenge, or perhaps I am not up for the challenge with him. It has been a very long time since I have hiked the Y...freshman year homecoming week.
which is sad to say that it is was almost 10 years ago!!!!!
Ah yes.... the 'lesson' in it all. I love the participants, I loved the story, I appreciate the message. Just a bit of Heaven on Earth if you ask me. Mom
Lucy even said to me (as I put her to bed again) something to the extent "Mom and Dad are on a date" She then proceed to tell me I could go sleep in the bed in the other room and offered me sheets and a blanket to sleep on the couch with.
I'm pretty sure Lucy would have beat Royce and me up the mountain. We hiked it in the fall and we definitely stopped at every turn in the trail. And BTW, I love her hair in a little ponytail.
It is fun to see the pictures of your guys' hike! It makes me very happy. I am so glad you went. And I am glad you guys went on a really good date too. You definitely deserved it!
Lucy you are a born mountain climber! Such wise observations and such wonderful curls! love you!
Lori, I just love your blog. "Further up and further in"--love that book. Love your family and your wisdom. Thank you, yet again and from my heart, for the inspiration you are!!
