What I didn't know was that it would be dangerous.
Last week Lucy and Spencer and I were playing blocks on the floor. I love playing in the kids' room when the afternoon light streams through the window and makes everything extra cheerful. Then, out of nowhere, a wooden block nailed me in the forehead. Hard. Lucy claimed it was unintentional. And she seemed sincerely sorry as she came and awkwardly put her arms around my crouching body as I rocked back and forth, holding my head. Several hours of ice reduced the cartoon-esque goose egg to a less noticeable bump. Today there is only a little discoloration and a tiny knot.
But apparently Spencer wanted in on the fun, too. He doesn't have enough strength for block throwing or projectiles in general, but he's got a great swipe. Claws and everything.
Today was the first, beautiful day I could open both my eyes after Thursday morning's scratched cornea. I tell you: unbelievable pain for 48 hours. But it's no lie that the eye is the fastest healing organ in the human body. Today I feel good as new, except for a slight inability to focus, which I guess only increases my empathy for all of you glasses/contact wearers.
The lesson?

Yes, children are incredibly dangerous, yet they have such sweet and innocent faces! Just today I was bitten by my sweet little boy as I nursed him. I'm glad your battle wounds are healing! As Mad-eye Moody would say - "Constant vigilance!" (Can you tell I'm reading the 4th Harry Potter?)
My kids love banging their heads into me and giving me fat lips!
Oh, I love the new August wall quotes!
Ouch!!! That sounds painful! Glad you are recovering, and quickly too.
Oh poor Lori!!! That's got to hurt! I'm glad you are recovering well though...
I constantly say (more joking than not) that these kids are going to be the death of me yet. This week it's because we've all been sick, and they aren't letting me sleep to get better. Poor thing, I am so sorry you got so banged up. Here's hoping your bruises fade soon!
Oh Lori you are so positive! I love it! And your writing is amazingly poetic when writing about how you got clobbered by your cute kids you put a statement like this in your post: "when the afternoon light streams through the window and makes everything extra cheerful." You're great! I'm glad you were able to recover quickly.
OUCH! I hate it when that happens. And it's so hard to not be mad--until you look at their sweet, little innocent faces. Motherhood is not for sissies =).
Ya know, my Spencer (I believe it was him not Madelyn) was about that same age when he decided that it would be awesome to scratch my cornea also...not fun whatsoever. It healed, vision is fine, but there were nights when I would wake up all of a sudden and the quick opening of the eyes would tear open the scratch again and I would be in pain for the rest of the day. The doctor told me to take fish oil that it would help with the healing process so it would detach again. Good luck. We still need to get together to play.
This gives new meaning to Love is a Battlefield. Glad your eye is feeling better.
no way! ouch. we think you should file a work comp claim... Hope the target is something else this week! Love!
Glad there are no permanent wounds--my sister-in-law suffered a painful broken nose when her daughter ran towards her during family prayer and head-butted her. Hard to dodge when your eyes are closed!
oh, man friend. Be careful out there!
Glad you're feeling better...
Oh! That sounds awful! Good thing our bodies heal so well, I guess.
