She had a good first day.
But first grade, in general, is a tough transition.
Such a long day for a little person! Add lots of major life changes as a precursor, and it's even harder than usual. Like tears every morning for about a month. (Hers upon our arrival and parting, mine immediately following every forced-cheerful "good-bye-you'll-have-so-much-fun-and-I'll-be-right-here-after-school!" farewell.)
But we were blessed with a wonderful first grade teacher!!
Words cannot even express my gratitude for that.
And I was so proud of my girl for persevering.
I remember lots of sweet moments about those rough days. The prayers Spencer and I would say for our sis when we got home after dropping her off. The conversation Lucy and I had one afternoon when I noticed the lion mascot on her school marque. We talked about Narnia (she hadn't read the books then, but she knew about them), and about her namesake the brave little queen Lucy, and about that great, kind, powerful, good Lion, who helped and watched over Lucy even though she couldn't always see him and even though she still had to do hard, scary things.
It didn't take long after that for Lucy to fully embrace first grade. And the rest of the year was, as they say, history.
Picture day
(with our carpool buddy Linda)
First SEP conference
(after which Lucy gave us a spontaneous tour of the whole school..."and do you want to see the library?!..and do you want to see the gym...?!?"... followed by pizza on the grass for dinner)
(Milk $)
Our little date to see Brian Stokes Mitchell in concert at BYU's Homecoming Spectacular.
(a reward for Lucy's spectacular! progress in going happily and bravely to school each day!
although we would have gone to that concert regardless =)
(I thought her hair was so long then! Now it seems so short =)
"Snowballs" for breakfast to celebrate the first snowfall.
(it wasn't always oatmeal, Lucy!)
The above picture is of our backyard, but Lucy left similar foot-print messages/pictures on the school's snowy lawns nearly every afternoon.
Teddy Bear/PJ Day!
Volunteering regularly in Lucy's class was a blessing I had during her first grade year that probably won't ever be matched in full. I loved that chance to be in my girl's classroom and to work with her teacher and get to know her friends! (And Spencer loved the illusion of being a full blown first grader =)
Valentines
Star of the Week
Bonus Buck Store
Wet-hair, "Here-eat-a-tortilla-on-the-way-to-school" morning.
(typical)
Socks/shoes on in the car.
(also typical)
On her seventh birthday, Lucy brought home a little card train just like I had for my fifth birthday! =)
Lucy's zoo field trip was the perfect culmination of a wonderful year!
Although there was still fun to be had on field day!
We loved (and still miss!) Mrs. Kay!
Last Day of School:
Lucy could hardly bear to leave school that day. =)
So we lingered a little....
...before coming home to review the year.
And I think this little essay, written by my girl sometime mid-year, might be the most telling artifact of all...
=)

It's hard to believe that that little face from the first day of school picture was old enough for first grade. What a change she's gone through. I sure love that fun, growing girl.
