BYU's Duck Derby was a favorite summertime first for us.
From the rubber ducks we raced to all the real ducks we watched and chased, this event was a hit and I hope it will be a tradition!
Compared to her two year old self (I love that old duck video with all my heart), Lucy has significantly improved in stealth.
After the Duck Derby, we enjoyed our first time through the newly renovated Bean Museum.
Lucy was pretty much born next door to the Bean Museum, and it was always a favorite destination during our Provo years.
So we loved being there for all the fun of opening day.
And we loved seeing all of Uncle Boyd's beautiful art on display.
Such a happy time (including a few hours with Mike and Marci's family, and building airplanes with Ryan).
We visited the Bean Museum again a few weeks ago with Grandma and Grandpa.
(Gpa had a nice visit with his cousin Kenny while waiting for us slow pokes to arrive.)
(I love this picture of Gpa & Spud in the middle of some tall tale about the giant beetle wall. =)
(Lucy adjusting her own peacock feathers.)
After seeing all the general museum sites, we loved walking around Uncle Boyd's exhibit again with Dad and hearing his insights and memories.
Good times.
And maybe in this BYU post I'll try to cram in the five fun days we spent with our little Crippen friends...
....since it was a BYU conference that took their parents to Atlanta.

We had a little Father's Day picnic at the cemetery, a BBQ later at Brent's, and a day of swimming at Grandma's.
Follows: the ten thousand "your children are still alive!" pictures I texted to Chris and Sherelda. =)

I really wanted to do summer school for my kids and their friends this year, but there just wasn't room in the summer to fit it in! So we used the Crippen's visit as an excuse to repeat some of our favorite activities (and to use up some extra supplies) from last year.
I had a suspicion there was a nest in the tree just over our fence, but I was truly surprised (and the kids were delighted!!) to find THREE nests in three of the trees just over our fence. =)
And then we had our own homemade nests as a snack.
The next day we did an art project and an activity for each of the primary colors.
(Our red activity was to act out Little Red Riding Hood - which was, I think, the highlight of the whole week. The kids reenacted the story ten million times, and when we had a play date a month later, they did it ten million more.)
Silliest kids.
When we finished all three primary colors, we celebrated with red, yellow, and blue jello ice,
And then mixed all three colors up for some fun rainbows.
Such colorful, happy days! So glad we could have these friends come and stay!

The Rubber Ducky race looks like so much fun. I need to look into that for next year. We love having BYU traditions. We went on a tour with my brother-in-law last week and my kids barely remember where we use to live, but they never forget the Cannon Center. :)
Such fun summer activities. I actually saw you there at the Bean Museum when you visited with your mom and dad. I wanted to stop and say, "You don't know me at all, but thank you so much for your blog! I have been reading it for years now, and it has made a difference in my life." But one of my kids ran off, so I had to go track him down and by the time I got back you were leaving the museum. :(
The Bean Museum seems like one of those places where it's always easy to see someone you know, but it did seem like a fun coincidence to me since I'm actually from out of town.
It looks like it's been a great summer for you guys! I'm so happy.
Nola, I've never been on a full BYU tour! some day! And yes, the Cannon Center is most memorable for my kids too! Sometime we should meet there for a meal!
Beth, You are so kind to drop a line! Tell me more about yourself - do we have some mutual friends? I wish the stars had aligned for us to meet that day at the museum, but I'm glad you at least left a comment. Maybe fortune will favor us with another opportunity to be introduced! In the meantime, I hope you're also having a great summer!
Thank you for the post. Watching "little Lucy" chase the ducks brought tears. Such sweet memories.
So glad your make your days with your not so little ones treasures we can all share. Love you!
I missed your blog while you took your blogging hiatus and I'm so glad you're back! I wish I could come to a preschool or kindergarten class taught by you--your themed days look so fun! I especially enjoyed your post about Independence Day. Your honesty takes courage and I am so glad you were brave enough to share your heart. After reading that post, I felt inspired and tried harder to see God's hand in my own life as you saw His hand in yours. Thank you. Keep blogging :)
Lori,
I actually happened on your blog by chance (although I'd be more inclined to call it providence). I don't know for sure of any mutual friends, although I think you may know Brandon and Jenni Mae Muirhead (they're cousins).
I live in Texas right now, but originally I'm from the Provo area. I'm here visiting family, and come out most summers. My husband is finishing a pediatric residency, after which we'll come back for a year (before we're off again to somewhere else for a fellowship in pediatric neuro oncology)--so there might be a chance of running into each other again sometime :) Especially since I like to hang out at BYU. We like it there ;)
Hope this upcoming school year is less overwhelming for you. I'm sure it will be. And I'm glad you've had the summer to relax some. Yeah for summer!
Beth, how fun to get to know you better! I do know Brandon and Jenni Mae, and love and admire them so much! How fun that you're related. Pediatric neuro oncology sounds amazing! I'm sure that's a difficult path, but what a great service too! Thank you for you kind words and wishes. Here's hoping for a BYU encounter someday =)
Oh I need to make it up to BYU one day soon to share it with my boys. (We really really want to come up at the start of the year when the Payson temple is having it's open house!) Your themed rainbow day looked perfect. And I would have loved to hear the stories that your dad shared about your Uncle Boyd!
